I found my way into the bootleg game the way it seems many did, as a collector first.
I met #Sucklord at a party in NYC about ten years ago and followed his strangely entertaining journey over the years. About a year ago I started collecting his toys and then quickly learned about just how big the world of bootleg toys was growing. I started collecting other artists' work and created my Instagram to share my collection with others.
There I got to know some of the artists I was collecting and with their help, I decided that instead of going broke buying #toys I should make some of my own.
My process starts with the best part of any toy project - rummaging through dirty old bins of loose toys. Comic book stores, flea markets, my parents' basement - anywhere that can spark a fun idea.
Then I usually design a cardback in Photoshop before washing, drying, sanding, priming, and repainting the figure. That's the long and the short of it - from idea to fruition.
If it makes me laugh, it's a success.
If it makes other people laugh, it's a triumph.
I have also had a lot of fun making cardbacks for other artists.
I am far from a designer, but I have taught myself enough to turn the scattered, silly ideas I have in my head into a card design that can turn a toy into something bigger than itself.
At the end of last year, Slug Toys came out with this amazing Toyoda figure - Toyota logo on Yoda body - simple, but perfect. I think he may have sold a few as is, but I just thought it would look amazing carded with Yoda driving a vintage Toyota through the desert. I asked him if I could give it a shot without mentioning the idea and he ended up loving it.
Now that toy has made its way to collections around the world.
Next I would like to get a handle on #casting .
I love making one-offs, but now that I have had people interested in buying pieces, I would love to begin doing small runs as well.
I am still in the error part of the trial and error stage, but, with the help of a few fellow toymakers, you'll see more work from me soon enough.
